You can choose if you want to invest in this game with money or time only. Gold can be sold at very low quantities and is not so difficult to get. As soon as you start playing you start producing goods (vegetables, meat, wood... materials). These materials can be sold at the market or exchanged for other materials. Once you get to level 5 and meet certain requisites you can start building gold mines and get gold every day. There is no limit to the number of mines one can have. Be careful however to not neglect other parts of the town because you will run into trouble!
You will have to take in account certain rules, an important one being the level of your energy. Energy is used for all actions and without it you won't be able to do anything. It replenishes by 1 point per day or can be bought. It is better to not start constructing buildings like crazy. You will need a system so that certain buildings fall under the influence of other buildings. Every building needs a road leading to the town hall. To upgrade any building the road will have to be upgraded to desired level first. The houses have to be a certain level to admit more workers. The workers need markets, hospitals, schools etc. to be happy. To be able to buy and sell and mine gold the happiness should be at least 60%. So you see there is a certain order in how you are allowed to construct, everything is related. If you just barge in and start constructing you will probably get stuck and loose a couple of days fixing errors. (like me;-)
GoldenTowns started late summer 2013 and since then the value of the gold coins has been rising. The game has a referral system that allows players to build down lines to earn extra materials and gold. The taxes players pay to the referrer will go to the game if the player was not referred.
